Camden County Heritage Museum & Historic Jail

Come explore Camden County’s history through arrowheads, varsity jackets, pottery, photographs, military uniforms, census records and much more! Camden’s history, stretching from Indigenous People to the  Colonial era and the Civil War period through World War II are interpreted through stories, artifacts and talented docents. Learn about construction of the Dismal Swamp Canal and Moses Grandy, a slave born in the late 1700s who years later gained his freedom and became a prominent abolitionist. The Historic Jail is furnished to resemble an old sheriff’s office along with the original bull pen containing four cells. The Museum & Historic Jail are a family-friendly destination and  a site on the African American Experience of Northeast NC where adults and kids can find something they enjoy.
